Atelier Jean Trotain - Lot 13
Atelier Jean Trotain A very charming Art Deco-era vermeil powder compact (silver of at least 800 millièmes plated with gold), rectangular in shape, with all four sides finished in black lacquer and embellished with a design of red and blue peony flowers and buds, centered by a coral medallion engraved with a hummingbird among the flowers (China, 19th century, Qing Dynasty) in a half-bezel setting adorned with rose-cut diamonds in a grain setting; the whole opens to reveal a compartment (with a flap) containing powder and a mirror (split). French work from the 1930s, featuring an older central element, in keeping with the tradition of French jewelry of that era of incorporating artifacts from other cultures to showcase craftsmanship.
